BILL CALLAHAN – Gold Record – LP€24.99 (Drag City) - For his first record in….uh, well, just a little over a year (!), Bill Callahan’s given us his first Gold Record. They can’t all be gold, and they’re not all six years apart either — all good! You could probably call the album “Gold Records,” too: all the songs have a stand-alone feel, like singles, meant for you to have a deep encounter with all of a sudden, from the start of the song to the finish. And what do you got when you have a record full of singles — and let’s face it, hit singles, at that?

ALL THEM WITCHES – Nothing As The Ideal – LP€28.99 (New West) – Limited Clear Vinyl - All Them Witches have built a career out of playing music that can not be pigeonholed into one specific genre. Nothing as the Ideal was recorded in Studio 2 at the world famous Abbey Road with the help of longtime mixing engineer Mikey Allred. The history and vibe of that setting laid the groundwork for what was to come. The band’s signature psychedelic blues riffs, relentless drums, melodic bass lines and non-linear lyrics are all present. The resulting album is a thought provoking head banger that is the band’s most cohesive album to date.

THROWING MUSES – Sun Racket – LP€24.99 (Fire) – Limited Violet Vinyl - Sun Racket is the brand new album from legendary Boston trio Throwing Muses, consisting of Kristin Hersh, David Narcizo and Bernard Georges. The follow up to 2013’s Purgatory / Paradise is an outpouring of modal guitars, reverbed shapes, echoey drums and driving bass set behind Kristen Hersh’s well-thumbed notebook of storylines. A ten-song opus of suitably wrought tales set against a wall of sound that’s at once calm and ethereal before building into glorious cacophonous crescendos. -

TRICKY – Fall To Pieces – LP €23.99 (False Idols) – Limited Red Vinyl - Fall To Pieces was recorded in Tricky’s Berlin studio in late 2019. Tricky is keen to point out that the tracks on the record can be deceptive; often short, ending abruptly and moving on to the next without warning. Although instrumentation varies from bursts of tense synths, distorted dial tones, and samples, the song’s lyrics can be dark and dense. Tricky’s music has always enlisted female vocalists to carry his ideas: the majority of tracks on Fall To Pieces, including Fall Please rely on Marta Złakowska, the singer he discovered during a european tour when he was left without a vocalist on the opening night.

DECLAN MCKENNA – Zeros – LP €24.99 (Columbia) – Limited Picture Disc - Columbia Records release eagerly anticipated second record from 21 year old singer / songwriter. This 10 song follow up to 2017’s What Do You Think About The Car? includes the hit singles Beautiful Faces, The Key To Life On Earth, Daniel, You’re Still A Child and latest single Be An Astronaut.

TOOTS AND THE MAYTALS – Got To Be Tough – LP €23.99 (BMG) – Legendary Jamaican artist Frederick “Toots” Hibberts returns with his first studio release in more than a decade. Got To Be Tough is an energizing provocation that renews the near six-decade career of the man who launched a new sound and genre with his 1968 release, Do The Reggay.

THE MAGIC GANG – Death Of The Party – LP €15.99 (Warner) – Limited Clear Vinyl - The Magic Gang release their buoyant new album Death Of The Party. The album was recorded in Atlanta with the Grammy-winning producer Ben H. Allen (Deerhunter, Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley), whose work in alternative and pop matches for band’s own blend of genres. The quartet approached the album with two objectives in mind. They aimed to broaden the scope of their harmony-rich, melodically focused pop. And inspired by Lou Reed, Alex Turner and especially Jonathan Richman they wanted to take a more observational lyrical approach. The stories they tell reflect the experiences of many of their early-twentysomething contemporaries. They explore anxieties about money, relationships and the future, but also the fun moments that they use to escape from such issues.

MICHAEL ROTHER – Dreaming – LP €21.99 (Gronland) - Michael Rother, founding member of krautrock groups Neu! and Harmonia with a brand new 2020 album called Dreaming. Rother had a goldmine of ideas and sketches and has turned them into a exceptional album.

MICHAEL ROTHER – Solo II – 7xCD Boxset €55.99 (Gronland) - This boxset contains the solo catalogue of Michael Rother (Kraftwerk, NEU!, Harmonia) as well as a brand new album. His first since 14 years. Limited edition and lush packaging. It includes the albums Lust, Süssherz und Tiefenschärfe, Traumreisen, Esperanza, Remember (The Great Adventure) and Dreaming, as well as a CD featuring Bonus Tracks, liner notes by Tom Pinnock and a text by Karl Bartos.

SOUNDWALK COLLECTIVE & PATTI SMITH – Peradam – 2LP €25.99 (Bella Union) – Limited Sky Blue Vinyl - The sounds of bird song, singing bowls and water rippling invite us to Peradam, which takes as its entry point René Daumal’s early 1930s novel Mount Analogue: a Novel of Symbolically Authentic Non-Euclidean Adventures in Mountain Climbing, in which the French writer, critic and poet mapped a metaphysical journey to “the ultimate symbolic mountain” in search of meaning. In it, Daumal introduced the idea of the “peradam”, a rare, crystalline stone – harbouring profound truths – that is only visible to seekers on a true spiritual path.

DEAFKID & PETBRICK – DEAFBRICK – LP – Limited Red / Black Splatter Vinyl - Two collaborators have come together to unwittingly create a record curiously suited to an intimidating and unpredictable new era. Deafbrick, the multiplication sum of Säo Paulo’s sonic warriors Deafkids and London’s pulverising duo Petbrick is a veritable force against adversity, and less a polite meeting of minds than a fiery collision whose impact and incandescence extend beyond the horizon. The results run the gamut through a litany of uniformly invigorating audial landscape – this is an arena where Deafkids’ appetite for lysergic punk-damaged tumult and Petbrick’s ventures into dystopian synth-driven soundscapes can happily engage in gladiatorial contest. From the unearthly percussive clangour of Hyperkinetic Mass Disordert to the DHR-addled chaos of the paint-stripping Mega Ritual, every second of Deafbrick is infused with malevolent charisma and iconoclastic élan.

MADNESS – Full House – LP €23.99 (BMG) – Madness, everyone’s favourite British musical institution, release this 1LP abridged version of their comprehensive Full House 4LP. THE MOUNTAIN GOATS – Tallahassee – LP €23.99 (4AD) – The Mountain Goats with their first album for 4AD finding John Darnielle (along with Nothing Painted Blue’s Peter Hughes and Franklin Bruno and some Delgados) delivering a stunning set of songs dripping with melodies and brilliant lyrics. Tony Doogan and Flaming Lip Michael Ivens behind the desk. John Darnielle strips his music of the tape hiss that surrounded his previous work like a security blanket made of static, opting for a clean sound that emphasizes the album’s sometimes stinging, sometimes sublimely beautiful words and melodies.

YO LA TENGO – Electr-O-Pura (25th Anniversary) – 2LP €23.99 (Matador) – Continuing with their ever-expanding Revisionist History series, Matador Records release a 25th anniversary reissue of Yo La Tengo’s 1995 album Electr-o-pura.
