Windy and Carl with Optigan Conservatory - Windy & Carl Meet Optigan Conservatory Windy and Carl with Optigan Conservatory
Black Vinyl LP
Windy & Carl Meet Optigan Conservatory is the purposefully misleading title of the first collaborative work from four friends who first met nearly thirty years ago. All active participants in Michigan's independent music scene since the early 1990s, Windy & Carl are renowned for their pioneering contributions to drift and guitar-based ambient music, creating deeply immersive soundscapes rooted in the natural world and marked by an unmistakable emotional vulnerability.
Optigan Conservatory is the duo of Frank Rotondo (leader of Detroit free music ensemble Laughing Gas) and Fred Thomas (songwriter and producer best known for Saturday Looks Good To Me), who have been creating minimal, timeless electro-acoustic music since 2016. Although the album came together almost effortlessly over a short period, the idea had been developing for many years.
In the closing days of 2024, Windy & Carl and Optigan Conservatory came together and naturally slipped into a shared creative process. Without discussing the music beyond their usual stream of jokes and conversation, the quartet simply began playing. Windy & Carl's hovering augmented chord voicings and vaporous guitar drones were joined by electric piano and synthesizer textures from Frank and Fred. After the initial sessions, the recordings were revisited, expanded and carefully shaped into their final form.
The result captures a beautiful, hermetic energy that feels greater than the sum of its parts. There are echoes of Windy & Carl's earliest recordings alongside the hazy, dreamlike atmosphere that defined the early kranky catalogue.
