Wolves Among Sheep: Ulver, the Norwegian enigma known for consistently provoking with class and conviction, has always set its own standards, establishing a unique class of its own. With each new chapter released by this forward-thinking group, no matter the musical incarnation they choose, it's inevitable that the shapes they take are nothing short of intriguing and intimidating.

Taking their moniker from the Norwegian word for wolves and drawing inspiration from lycanthropy (the metamorphosis of man into beast), as well as ancient Norse myths and nature, Ulver made a significant impact on the black metal scene, symbolizing the second wave and shaping avant-garde black metal. The Vargnatt promo tape, released in 1993, already hinted at Ulver's impeccable mystique. Layered with a sad romantic impression, this tape paved the way for the creation of their legendary trilogy: Bergtatt, Kveldssanger, and Nattens Madrigal.

Vargnatt marked Ulver as one of the most distinct and progressive artists within the Norwegian black metal scene. Not only were they sonically exceptional, but thematically as well. The concepts, tales, and themes delving deep into medieval Norway added to the overall atmosphere, creating a heavily layered canvas of dark wonders. Ulver forged a sound drenched in bleak, harsh, and unearthly tones, merging ethereal black metal histrionics with delicate folk-inspired passages that reflected visions of nature and myth at their peak.

Vargnatt is where it all began for Ulver—primitive, rough, yet wondrous and beautiful. It set them apart from the pack and initiated a journey that continues to stir up conversations and controversies, defining their nature of the beast. Ulver thrives on pushing boundaries, sometimes to the point of offending, but this audacity has always been integral to their identity.
