This collection celebrates the remarkable musical legacy of Tommy McCook, founding member of The Skatalites and one of Jamaica's most influential saxophonists, arrangers, and bandleaders.
Born in Havana, Cuba, in 1927 and raised in Jamaica, McCook developed his musical talent at the renowned Alpha Boys School before becoming a leading figure in Jamaica's jazz scene. Returning from the Bahamas in 1962, he joined Coxsone Dodd at Studio One, helping shape the development of ska with The Skatalites alongside Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, Jackie Mittoo, Lloyd Brevett, and Lloyd Knibbs.
Following the group's split in 1965, McCook became musical director at Duke Reid's Treasure Isle studio, forming The Supersonics and playing a key role in the evolution of rocksteady. His expert arrangements and musicianship made him the first choice for producers including Bunny Lee, bringing an unmistakable sophistication to countless classic recordings.
This compilation brings together a selection of instrumental rhythms featuring Tommy McCook and fellow horn players performing over vocal-free backing tracks. Showcasing his expressive saxophone playing and masterful arrangements, these recordings highlight the style and musicianship that made Tommy McCook one of the defining figures in Jamaican music.
