On Squirrel Flower’s new album, Say a Prayer to the Gods of Getting Going, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ella Williams delivers her most transcendent and instantly classic record to date. It’s an album full of hope and beauty, with themes of staying in constant motion, electric love, and knowing when to leave, but also when to stick around.

After touring in support of 2023’s Tomorrow’s Fire, Williams remained on the road, following instinct over itinerary through places including Gary, Indiana; Los Angeles; Putney, Vermont; Silver City, New Mexico; and Hudson, New York. Each stop became a site of creative renewal, eventually leading to recording sessions in a makeshift studio in rural Wisconsin and at Drop of Sun in Asheville, North Carolina.

Featuring friends and collaborators including Dimitri Giannopoulos (Horse Jumper of Love), Sofia Jensen (Free Range), Clay Frankel (Twin Peaks, Hazel City) and others, the album captures both the freedom and uncertainty of life in motion. Standout tracks such as “Reelin” and “Highway Woman” explore the perpetual search for reflection and liberation, while “Not Me” and “Cleveland” showcase Williams’ sharpened songwriting and some of the strongest vocal performances of her career.

Mixed and co-produced by Alex Farrar (MJ Lenderman, Wednesday), Say a Prayer to the Gods of Getting Going is a record of cosmic rebirth, looking backwards in order to illuminate what lies ahead. Alongside relentless touring across North America and Europe, Williams has earned acclaim from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, The New York Times, Paste, and appearances on NPR Tiny Desk and KEXP, establishing herself as one of the most compelling songwriters of her generation.
