Many within the deep house community felt a profound sense of loss at the passing of Mike Huckaby in 2020. Among them was Cork-based duo Southbound Sounds, whose new EP pays tribute to the Motor City legend. Snippets of Huckaby's voice, plucked from a variety of sources, are scattered across title track 'Educator', a superb slab of Detroit futurism-influenced deep house brilliance rich in melancholic motifs, tactile synth bass, bittersweet chords and rolling beats. John Daly remixes, giving the track more of a beatdown swing while retaining the bassline and poignant musical elements from the pair's original mix. Elsewhere, 'Keep It Movin' is a sumptuous, dancefloor ready deep house soundscape underpinned by swinging machine drums, while 'Upstairs' is a dubby, pleasingly electronic deep house throb-job.
