Of all the early soul and R&B vocal groups formed in Detroit in the mid-50s, The  Miracles proved to be the most successful. They played a key role in helping  transform the Motor City and the record company named after it, into an international  centre of popular music. Fronted by Smokey Robinson, the band developed an instantly recognisable Motown sound - a sound which would forever change R&B and pop music.
