No Sweat - No Sweat No Sweat
Remastered 2CD edition with 16 bonus tracks and full booklet with lyrics.
When No Sweat entered Goodnight L.A. Studios in Van Nuys, California, they were no longer an ambitious Irish club band. They had secured a major recording contract with London Records, enjoyed chart success with Heart And Soul, and attracted the attention of one of Britain's biggest rock stars. Expectations surrounding their debut album were considerable.
Although Joe Elliott's involvement with the band had been instrumental in launching their career—most notably through the production of the breakthrough single Heart And Soul—the full-length album was entrusted to veteran producer Keith Olsen, working for Pogo Logo Corporation. Olsen had already established an impressive reputation through his work with artists including Whitesnake, Foreigner, Scorpions, Ozzy Osbourne, Pat Benatar and Santana, making him one of the most sought-after producers in American rock.
One of the album's lesser-known details concerns the rhythm section. James Kottak, later famous for his work with Kingdom Come and the Scorpions, performed the drum tracks during the recording sessions. By the time the album was released, however, Ray Fean had joined the band, meaning the musician featured on the record was not the drummer appearing in later promotional activities and concerts.
Musically, the album reflected the polished production values that dominated melodic hard rock at the turn of the decade. Powerful rhythm guitars, layered backing vocals, keyboard textures and radio-friendly choruses were balanced with enough energy to appeal to fans of heavier rock. Rather than attempting to imitate Def Leppard, No Sweat developed a sound positioned somewhere between British melodic hard rock and the polished American AOR production style that was then defining the international market.
Released in 1990, the album contained ten tracks. Although critics generally praised the musicianship, production quality and commercial songwriting, the album entered the market during a period of profound change. By 1990 the melodic hard rock boom was beginning to lose momentum, and within two years the rise of grunge would transform the commercial landscape. Many albums of comparable quality released during this period suffered a similar fate: strong artistic achievements overshadowed by rapidly changing musical trends.
Today, No Sweat is regarded as one of the overlooked melodic hard rock releases of the period. Original vinyl editions, promotional press kits and London Records marketing material have become increasingly scarce, contributing to the album's reputation among collectors.
