Mother Church - Yolk Mother Church

Mother Church's debut album, Yolk, is a timeless recording captured live to tape in the crypt of Bethnal Green Church over just two days. The recording reflects history back at us through audaciously well-performed and exquisitely constructed songs.

Yolk fuses together musical influences ranging from expansive late Romanticism and early 20th century classical music to obscure Estonian folk singers and ancient poetry, with touches of dreamy modern indie. Interweaving improvised strings and clarinet melodies with its lyrically rich reflections on overarching themes such as love, faith and motherhood, it also showcases Mother Church’s unique wit and insight.

Following their collaboration in avant-garde folk band Bishopskin - after initially crossing paths during mass at an Oxford University Chapel - Revd Tati Gutteridge and James Donovan (founding member of HMLTD) have now decided to create music together as Mother Church. With the addition of sweeping – and largely improvised! – strings from classically trained violinist Hana Miyagi, their debut album Yolk offers a stunning collection of folk compositions.
