This 7-inch single compiles two singles by Montreal-based Canadian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Markus Murphy, originally released in 2024 and 2025, respectively. Drawing on the influence of the sophisticated 1960s pop music he grew up with, his sound brings those influences to life with a more contemporary, groove-oriented approach, while also revealing elements of modern soul, city pop, and soft psychedelia. These are exceptional songs brought to life by his high-register vocals, masterful arrangements, and accomplished musicianship.
“Took Me Up” immediately grabs the listener with its exhilarating hook in the intro. A sublime blend of 1970s modern soul and city pop, its catchy, groove-filled sound feels as though elements from multiple songs have been seamlessly woven together. The overwhelming lift of the chorus is especially exhilarating, making it highly recommended for fans of Free Soul as well. In contrast, “Can't Decide” offers a dreamy, floating atmosphere reminiscent of sophisticated psychedelic pop from the 1960s and 1970s, with beautifully balanced harmonies and a laid-back surf-rock feel. It's equally addictive.
This release marks Markus Murphy's first-ever vinyl release. It offers a glimpse of the remarkable talent behind the artist, building anticipation for his debut album, currently scheduled for release in 2027.
