Born in New York, the American born Greek soprano Maria Callas (1923-1977) was one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century.

Critics praised her bel canto technique, wide-ranging voice, and dramatic interpretations. Her repertoire ranged from classical opera seria to the bel canto operas of Donizetti, Bellini, and Rossini, to the works of Verdi and Puccini, and the music dramas of Wagner.

This LP puts together some of the best arias she ever recorded, including her perennial versions of the Habanera from Carmen, O Mio Babbino Caro from Gianni Schicchi, and Casta Diva from Norma.

"I am not an angel and do not pretend to be. That is not one of my roles. But I am not the devil either. I am a woman and a serious artist, and I would like so to be judged." Maria Callas.
