JOYCE NOTES is the recording of Irish guitarist Louis Stewart’s six-part suite based on
scenes from James Joyce’s groundbreaking novel, Ulysses, performed at the Cork
Jazz Festival in 1982 by an Irish-American octet with readings from Dublin-born actor
Eamon Morrissey.
Though not renowned as a composer, in JOYCE NOTES Stewart produced an artistically bold and adventurous work, merging jazz composition with modern literature. Both he and Livia Records founder, Gerald Davis were Joyce enthusiasts and conceived the suite to coincide with the centenary of Joyce’s birth in 1982.
Now mastered for the first time, JOYCE NOTES comes with a detailed 16-page booklet, containing sleeves notes from noted journalist Philip Watson, and several original performance photographs.
Following its Cork premiere JOYCE NOTES was performed just twice more, in the
1990s, once in Oslo with a local band and Norwegian text, and once in Dublin.
