Louie Vega / Gilles Peterson's Havana Cultura Band - Brownswood Remix Editions 008 Louie Vega / Gilles Peterson's Havana Cultura Band
Black Vinyl 12"
Brownswood Editions unearths another treasure from the catalogue, revisiting the Havana Cultura project. Initiated by DJ, broadcaster and curator Gilles Peterson in the late 2000s, Havana Cultura connected contemporary Cuban musicians with global audiences at a time when international perceptions of Cuban music were still largely rooted in the Buena Vista Social Club era.
Instead, the project spotlighted a new generation of Havana-based artists whose sound drew from contemporary diasporic influences – neo-soul, hip-hop and reggaeton – seen through a distinctly Afro-Cuban lens.
One of the project’s most explosive moments came with this Cuban reimagining of Fela Kuti’s classic Roforofo Fight, a track that quickly became a DJ favourite thanks to its live energy and deep rhythmic drive. The band features both Mayra Caridad Valdés (daughter of Chucho Valdés) – one of Cuba’s leading contemporary jazz and soul singers – and internationally acclaimed pianist Roberto Fonseca.
This new 12" edition pairs the original version with a highly sought-after remix from house music legend Louie Vega, who brings his unmistakable New York Latin house touch, extending the groove for contemporary dancefloors while respecting the Afro-Cuban roots of the recording. The original remix pressing has since become highly sought after on Discogs, making this long-awaited return to vinyl essential for DJs and collectors alike.
A meeting point of Afrobeat heritage, Cuban musicianship and club culture, the release reflects Brownswood’s long-standing mission to join the dots between scenes, sounds and generations.
