Detroit duo Johnstonsons — John River and Stonny Moon, lifelong friends operating under a band name that reads like a Lynchian fake ID — have spent three years figuring out which version of themselves they actually wanted to make a record as. The name sounds more like a CB handle or a landscaping company than a synth-pop band, which is exactly what lets the actual record sneak up on you. Their debut LP for à La Carte Records, "Hard II Impersonate," makes the gap between expectation and execution into part of the pleasure — by the first chorus, what the band is called stops mattering and what they sound like takes over.

The title doubles as a working principle. River and Moon got two full records' worth of material into this album before tearing both up — twice — when the songs landed too close to what someone else might make. "Hard II Impersonate" is the third pass and the first one that survives that test: a debut that only Johnstonsons could plausibly have written. The lyrics follow the same logic, trading the cryptic for something more direct and less defensive — the kind of plainspoken vulnerability that's harder to fake than metaphor.

Sonically, the record draws on the cinematic emotional reach of Tears for Fears, the patient spaciousness Talk Talk worked into the seams of their best arrangements, and the contemporary discipline of Body of Light — songs that trust a held note before they sell you anything.
