Hot Mulligan - Why Would I Watch Hot Mulligan
Indies Half Red / Half White Vinyl LP
When Hot Mulligan took to social media to declare themselves “#1 Hot New Band,” it would have been easy to dismiss the terminally online emo quartet’s proclamation as just another irreverent joke from their ever-expanding bag of tricks.
But Hot Mulligan have a habit of manifesting things into reality, whether that means name-dropping Michelle Branch and Mark Hoppus in song titles and getting responses from both, only one of whom understood the joke, or becoming genuinely synonymous with the latest waves of pop-punk and emo, or “post-emo,” the genre the band jokingly claims to have invented.
Formed in Lansing, Michigan in 2014, the group — vocalist Tades Sanville, guitarists Chris Freeman and Ryan Malicsi, and drummer Brandon Blakeley — rose from basement shows to underground favourites on the strength of their first two acclaimed albums, Pilot (2018) and you’ll be fine (2020).
Now, with more than 140 million Spotify streams behind them, the band’s third LP, Why Would I Watch, cements their evolution into one of the most versatile and emotionally resonant bands operating in the underground today.
