HIBUSHIBIRE return this August with their fifth studio album, Phantom Fuzzy Exotica.
Phantom Fuzzy Exotica continues to find the Osaka quartet exploring their own little universe, where psychedelia, '70s hard rock, and folk rock influences collide. The album features short, punchy riff-heavy songs, mellow passages, epic psychedelic jams, and more vocals than on previous releases.
The band describe the album as being inspired by "phantoms", things that seem to exist, yet somehow don't. Four of the five tracks feature vocals, with Invocation and Ritual Dance of the Electric Nonsense being the only instrumental. Written following the band's 2025 tour, the album came together naturally through the combined ideas of all four members.
The opening track, Mandrake Oracle, is built around a single guitar riff by changchang, while Minagoroshi Western was imagined as the soundtrack to a fictional spaghetti western. Daydream Rendezvous explores acid psychedelic folk, Invocation and Ritual Dance of the Electric Nonsense delivers hard psychedelic jazz rock with a nod to Frank Zappa, and Ai Vist Lo Lop is a cover of a traditional song by Mont-Jòia, featuring an a cappella section and a newly reimagined arrangement.
HIBUSHIBIRE are changchang (guitar, vocals, bouzouki, electronics), Tetsuji Toyoda (bass, vocals), AOI HAMA (drums, vocals), and Kohei Katsuma (congas, vocals, theremin, percussion).
