This release presents the complete original album Dexter Blows Hot and Cool recorded in 1955 and originally released on the Los Angeles based label Dootone Records (DTL207). A point of note, this was the saxophonist's only recorded collaboration with pianist Carl Perkins, a rising star at the time.

Little was heard of tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon on record during the 1950s and this somewhat robscure LP was one of Gordon's only three appearances on record during the period 1953-1959. Here he fronts an all-star quintet with Carl Perkins, Leroy Vinnegar, Chuck Thompson, and the forgotten trumpeter Jimmy Robinson. A strong straight-ahead session, from what was then a dark period in Gordon's life, 'Dexter Blows Hot & Cool' is a worthy addition to any collection of the great man's output.

Down Beat reviewer noted that Gordon appeared "somewhat mellowed, making little attempt to impress either as a technician or melodic innovator" but that there was "a quiet authority in his forthright, simply tailored style".
