Dark Funeral was formed in Stockholm in 1993 by Lord Ahriman and Blackmoon, emerging during the second wave of black metal with a singular and uncompromising vision: absolute devotion to darkness, speed, discipline and extremity. From the outset, the band distinguished themselves through precision, relentless aggression and an unwavering commitment to black metal in its most orthodox form.

In January 1994, Dark Funeral recorded their self-titled debut mini-album at Dan Swanö’s Unisound Studio. Entirely self-financed and self-released, the EP emerged on May 4 the same year and immediately established the band as one of the most intense new forces within the underground.

Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Dark Funeral cemented their status as one of the true pillars of Swedish black metal through a succession of genre-defining releases, including The Secrets Of The Black Arts, Vobiscum Satanas and Diabolis Interium. The latter was nominated for Best Metal Album at the Swedish P3 Guld Awards, marking a rare moment of mainstream recognition for such uncompromising brutality.

The band’s ferocity extended into the live arena with landmark tours across Asia, Europe and South America, including a groundbreaking Far East tour in 2002 and a defining appearance at Wacken Open Air in 2003. Their acclaimed live album De Profundis Clamavi Ad Te Domine and the Attera Orbis Terrarum DVD series further documented their global rise.

Subsequent albums such as Attera Totus Sanctus, Angelus Exuro Pro Eternus, Where Shadows Forever Reign and We Are The Apocalypse reinforced Dark Funeral’s standing as one of black metal’s most enduring and respected forces. Their 2022 release We Are The Apocalypse achieved some of the strongest chart positions of the band’s career and marked their highest U.S. Billboard entries to date.

Recorded during the band’s triumphant return to the stage following the pandemic, A Beast To Praise immortalises the monumental Fållan performance that reunited DARK FUNERAL with their audience in a ritual of rebirth, unity and uncompromising fire.
