On 15th and 16th October 2020, drummer Daniel Villarreal was joined by guitarist Jeff Parker and bassist Anna Butterss for two afternoons of recording in the backyard of Chicali Outpost in Los Angeles. For all three musicians, it was their first ensemble recording session since the pandemic had brought live collaboration to a halt just seven months earlier.

While selected recordings from these sessions appeared on Villarreal's critically acclaimed 2022 album Panamá 77, much of the music remained unreleased until now.

Lados B is a deep dive into the spontaneous music created by Villarreal, Parker, and Butterss across those two days. Villarreal leads the trio through rhythmic structures inspired as much by the Latin funk of Fania Records as the hypnotic, otherworldly sound of Brain Records, while Parker and Butterss draw on their extensive experience playing together—heard previously on their ETA IVtet releases—to create rich harmonic foundations for free improvisation.

The result is a vivid document of collective composition, capturing the creativity, chemistry, and musical freedom of three exceptional improvisers during a unique moment in history.
