This release includes all the albums recorded together by the legendary Bill Evans Trio featuring Evans on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass, and Paul Motian on drums: the 2 studio albums Portrait in Jazz & Explorations (with the addition of 2 bonus tracks), and The Village Vanguard Sessions (which comprises both Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby plus an alternative take of “Alice in Wonderland” and a reading of “I Loves You Porgy” absent from both releases). Widely considered one of the very best piano trios in modern jazz, and certainly the most influential of them all, it would come to a tragic end when LaFaro died in a car crash on July 6, 1961,at the age of 25, just ten days after the Village Vanguard sets presented here.
