Mighty Vertebrate is the International Anthem debut from Anna Butterss. The Adelaide-born bassist and composer has become a first-call musician for touring and studio work in Los Angeles since relocating there in 2014, earning credits across the experimental, jazz, and pop worlds. Their most celebrated contributions to the city's thriving scene include work with Jeff Parker's ETA IVtet and the proto-trance supergroup SML, described by Pitchfork as representing "the thrilling next phase of a vibrant L.A. community."

Following an intensive period of touring at the end of 2022, Butterss set out to write new music through a series of focused creative exercises, exploring unconventional approaches to composition, rhythm, sampling, and instrumentation.

The resulting compositions are tightly structured and melodically rich, brought to life by a group of longtime collaborators including Ben Lumsdaine (drums, guitar, production), Josh Johnson (saxophone), Gregory Uhlmann (guitar), and a guest appearance from Jeff Parker.

From the groove-driven opener Bishop to the spacious, cinematic Seeing You, Mighty Vertebrate showcases Butterss' expansive compositional vision, balancing intricate arrangements with adventurous improvisation across a cohesive and deeply rewarding album.
