AGAINST ME! – Shape Shift With Me

Punk rock band Against Me! recently celebrated the fifth anniversary of the release of their seventh studio album, Shape Shift with Me.

The album followed Transgender Dysphoria Blues, which was the band’s first album since leader Laura Jane Grace came out as a transgender woman, and Shape Shift with Me continued to touch on some recurring themes surrounding the embrace of her gender.

“Delicate, Petite & Other Things I’ll Never Be” has Grace reflecting lyrically, “I want to be more real than all of the others / I want to be more real than all of the rest,” with “Haunting, Haunted, Haunts” using metaphor to convey personal feelings,”I know the feeling well of longing for something that’s lost / I feel you like a phantom limb.”

Though the album as a whole has Against Me! showing up in full form, exploring a range of conversations and sounds, as a raging, authentic, and all-encompassing displaying the attitude and edge fans have come to embrace and expect from the group.
