The Marriage of Heaven and Hell Part One is the first instalment of a trilogy of concept albums, comprising The Marriage of Heaven and Hell Part Two and Invictus, exploring the relationship between humanity and divinity. The songs on the album do not follow a single storyline, but were inspired by religion, mythology, poetry, and the personal beliefs of lyricist David DeFeis.
The Marriage of Heaven and Hell Part Two was well received for its romantic and lyrical approach and is regarded as a major influence on symphonic metal.
