NAT KING COLE - Penthouse Serenade (Waxtime Reissue w/ 2 bonus tracks) - LP - 180g Vinyl [JAN 16]
LP - Limited Edition 180g Audiophile Black Vinyl featuring the complete original LP + 2 bonus tracks 'Laugh! Cool Down' and 'I Surrender Dear' [alternate take] (2026 Waxtime Reissue).
Released at a time when Nat King Cole was more acknowledged by the public as a
popular chart-topping singer, this album is a reminder that he was also an incredible
jazz pianist and the inspiration of many other musicians of the time and beyond,
including Oscar Peterson.
The original Penthouse Serenade album, issued in 1952, was a 10" LP and consisted
of the first four tracks on each side. It was reissued in 1955 adding four tracks from a
new quartet session on which Lee Young replaced Bunny Shawker on drums.
Includes the bonus tracks 'Laugh! Cool Down' and 'I Surrender Dear' [alternate take].
"The year after he had formally disbanded his trio to turn his attention to vocal pop
music, Nat King Cole reversed himself and went into the studio with guitarist John
Collins, bassist Charlie Harris, and drummer Bunny Shawker and recorded the eightsong 10" LP Penthouse Serenade, a quiet, reflective set of standards like 'Somebody Loves Me' and 'Laura' that he performed instrumentally at the piano. The album confirmed that, whatever success he might be having as a singer, he hadn't lost his touch." - ****1/2 William Ruhlmann, AllMusic
