Universal Songs marks the first time Kim Carnes’ career has been collected into a dedicated box set, spanning every album she recorded for A&M, EMI America and MCA between 1975 and 1988.
This ten-disc collection arrives in a rigid slipcase, with each disc housed in top-opening digisleeves featuring the original album artwork. A 24-page booklet includes a foreword written by Kim herself, alongside an extensive essay by Christian John Wikane.
Compiled with the full cooperation of Kim Carnes, Universal Songs also features a number of 12-inch dance mixes making their CD debut, alongside bonus material including her duets with Barbra Streisand and Kenny Rogers, as well as the three new songs originally recorded for her 1993 compilation Gypsy Honeymoon.
Although best known worldwide for Bette Davis Eyes, Kim Carnes had already built a substantial body of work before her breakthrough. A multifaceted vocalist and highly sought-after songwriter, she had released four acclaimed albums and achieved chart success prior to the 1980s, notably with her cover of Warm Love, originally recorded by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, and the 1978 duet You’re A Part Of Me with Gene Cotton.
Everything changed with the global success of Bette Davis Eyes, which propelled Kim to international stardom. The single won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year, while its parent album Mistaken Identity received a nomination for Album of the Year. Bette Davis Eyes remains one of the defining songs of the 1980s and continues to endure as a beloved classic.
Its follow-up, Voyeur (1982), continued her momentum, with the title track reaching number 29 on the US charts and earning another Grammy nomination. In 1984, Kim won an additional Grammy through her contribution to the Flashdance soundtrack with the haunting I’ll Be Here Where The Heart Is, featured during one of the film’s pivotal moments before later appearing on her album Café Racers.
A single from that album, Invisible Hands, earned yet another Grammy nomination, while Crazy In The Night became a further chart success in 1985, reaching number 15 in the US. Its accompanying album Barking At Airplanes reached the Top 50 before Kim rounded out the decade with two further acclaimed records, Lighthouse and View From The House, both containing some of the strongest material of her career.
