In 1998, songwriting & production duo Emily Haines & Jimmy Shaw formed Metric & left Toronto for NYC in search of like-minded artists. In '01/'02, they were joined by drummer Joules Scott Key & bassist Joshua Winstead, & found themselves at the centre of the city’s burgeoning alt-rock scene alongside bands like LCD Soundsystem, The Strokes, TV On the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol & more.

Fantasies is the group's fourth album featuring the singles "Help, I'm Alive" and "Gimme Sympathy". Since its release in 2009, Fantasies has grown into Metric’s most-streamed album, racking up over 252 million plays on Spotify alone as of July 2025. Widely celebrated at the time—debuting at No. 1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers and earning Alternative Album of the Year at the 2010 Junos—its enduring popularity continues to make it a defining high water mark in the band's catalog.
