Macy Gray's debut album On How Life Is was released in 1999 and can certainly be called one of the most impressive R&B/soul debuts. Selling seven million copies worldwide, it reached a wide audience and received airplay beyond genre-specific radio stations.
The single "I Try" became a massive hit, reaching No. 1 in Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand. Alongside its commercial success, the album was widely praised by critics for its distinctive style, which felt like a breath of fresh air within the genre. "I Try" went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2001.
