VARIOUS ARTISTS - Tropical Drums Of Deutschland - 2 x LP €27.99 (Music From Dreams)

Compiled by Jan Schulte, a collection of tracks chosen from mostly small German labels in the late 1980s. Thirteen tracks of "undefinable tribal folk jazz" from a time of the 'world music' boom that was emerging in the country at the time. An oddity but a really interesting collection.

THE FALL - Best Of The Fall & Mark E. Smith - LP €19.99 (Secret Records)

The Hedge Schools - Magnificent Birds LP €19.99

In an age of short attention spans, online outrage over just about anything, and a relentless pace of life, an opportunity to take time out and get off the treadmill becomes increasingly important. The music of The Hedge Schools provides that rare opportunity to breathe out and take stock, or simply immerse yourself in some gorgeous music. Anyone who enjoyed either of the previous Hedge Schools albums, particularly 2015’s At The End Of A Winding Day, will know that Joe Chester and Pat Barrett’s collective is a little bit special. Their band name matches their output, a thing of quality, quietly operating on the margins.
SEAN McERLAINE - Music For Empty Ears - LP €17.99 (Ergodos) Seán Mac Erlaine’s richly-textured woodwind sound meets an expanded palette on Music for Empty Ears, the Irish musician’s breathtaking new album. On this record, Mac Erlaine collaborates with Norwegian luminaries Jan Bang and Eivind Aarset to reveal a fresh, variegated musical language. The album journeys through a splendour of musical shades: from gently insistent minimal grooves and hushed invocations of tracks such as The Melting song; to a warm, celebratory treatment of the Irish traditional tune An Buachaill Caol Dubh; and to moments of visceral, splintered abstraction in Love the Way They Sing and The Alchemist III. Mac Erlaine works in a variety of settings icluding free improvisation, contemporary jazz and folk music.
BIFFY CLYRO - MTV Unplugged: Live at the Roundhouse London - 2 x LP €36.99 (Warners) Although best known for their energetic live shows, Biffy Clyro have often demonstrated that their songs possess an added poignancy when stripped back to their essence. This is their first acoustic album, ‘MTV Unplugged: Live At Roundhouse London’. The revamped MTV Unplugged series sees Biffy Clyro follow in the footsteps of influential rock bands who had previously performed as part of the series, notably Nirvana, Oasis, Pearl Jam and R.E.M. Includes 2 x heavyweight vinyl LPs as well as the CD and DVD formats. Also included is a limited edition art print and booklet.
