The great 50s R\u0026amp;B songwriter \u003cstrong\u003eJesse Stone\u003c\/strong\u003e provides a rocker for the much-admired \u003cstrong\u003eJimmy Breedlove\u003c\/strong\u003e and a super-catchy ‘\u003cem\u003eThis Morning\u003c\/em\u003e’ for an unknown mixed vocal group that has a joyous gospel feel. Jesse also penned ‘\u003cem\u003ePrivate Eye\u003c\/em\u003e’, a classic early 60s story-song, for \u003cstrong\u003eBuddy Wilkins\u003c\/strong\u003e which was issued on \u003cstrong\u003eAl Sears\u003c\/strong\u003e’ \u003cstrong\u003eTri-Ess\u003c\/strong\u003e imprint.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe title track is used twice, on two very different \u003cstrong\u003eFraternity\u003c\/strong\u003e recordings. \u003cstrong\u003eKenny Smith\u003c\/strong\u003e’s version was issued in 1964 and has many followers, but the equally meritorious Coasters-inspired composition by \u003cstrong\u003ethe Citations\u003c\/strong\u003e is newly discovered. \u003cstrong\u003eWin Menifee\u003c\/strong\u003e’s ‘\u003cem\u003eI’m Runnin’ Around\u003c\/em\u003e’ from the same Cincinnati label comes complete with a fascinating back-story.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThere are three cover versions. \u003cstrong\u003eVermettya Royster\u003c\/strong\u003e’s ‘\u003cem\u003eAll Around The World\u003c\/em\u003e’ is backed by \u003cstrong\u003eJames Brown\u003c\/strong\u003e’s 1961 band, while \u003cstrong\u003eRoosevelt Lee\u003c\/strong\u003e's 1970 update of the 1947-originated ‘\u003cem\u003eHey Little Girl\u003c\/em\u003e’ funks the tune up a la Godfather of Soul. The cover that will make the biggest noise is undoubtedly west coast band \u003cstrong\u003ethe\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003cstrong\u003eAfterglows\u003c\/strong\u003e’ version of \u003cstrong\u003eBarbara Lynn\u003c\/strong\u003e’s evergreen dancer ‘\u003cem\u003eI’m A Good Woman\u003c\/em\u003e’ – this is a future monster.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eGolden Crest\u003c\/strong\u003e provides two fabulous male vocal group sides – the swinging ‘\u003cem\u003eWhat’s On Your Mind\u003c\/em\u003e’ by \u003cstrong\u003eEddie Daye\u003c\/strong\u003e’s \u003cstrong\u003eFour Bars\u003c\/strong\u003e and the delightful harmonies of the appropriately-named, but unknown \u003cstrong\u003eDelights\u003c\/strong\u003e ‘\u003cem\u003eMary Don’t You Weep\u003c\/em\u003e’.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBlues still thrived into the 70s as \u003cstrong\u003eAlbert Washington\u003c\/strong\u003e’s mean and moody ‘\u003cem\u003eCase Of The Blues\u003c\/em\u003e’ proves. \u003cstrong\u003eSmokey Wilson\u003c\/strong\u003e took the music into the late 70s with the storming ‘\u003cem\u003eGoin’ Away Baby\u003c\/em\u003e (\u003cem\u003eRound Like An Apple\u003c\/em\u003e)’, which benefits here from a 45-style edit.
