More strident and political than its predecessor, it included the pro-vegetarian title track, the light-hearted republicanism of \"\u003cem\u003eNowhere Fast\u003c\/em\u003e\", and the anti-corporal punishment \"\u003cem\u003eThe Headmaster Ritual\u003c\/em\u003e\" and \"\u003cem\u003eBarbarism Begins at Home\u003c\/em\u003e\". The band had also grown more diverse musically, with Marr adding rockabilly riffs to \"\u003cem\u003eRusholme Ruffians\u003c\/em\u003e\" and Rourke playing a funk bass solo on \"\u003cem\u003eBarbarism Begins at Home\u003c\/em\u003e\".  '\u003cem\u003eMeat Is Murder\u003c\/em\u003e' was the band's only studio album to reach number one in the UK charts.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThe Smiths completed lengthy tours of the UK and US to promote the album.
