Known for his work as a bandleader and during the 1950s with \u003cstrong\u003eMiles Davis\u003c\/strong\u003e, Garland helped popularize the block chord style of playing in jazz piano. Garland became famous in 1954 when he joined the \u003cstrong\u003eMiles Davis Quintet\u003c\/strong\u003e, featuring \u003cstrong\u003eJohn Coltrane\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003ePhilly Joe Jones\u003c\/strong\u003e, and \u003cstrong\u003ePaul Chambers\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTogether, the group recorded their famous Prestige albums, \u003cem\u003eMiles: The New Miles Davis Quintet\u003c\/em\u003e (1954), \u003cem\u003eWorkin'\u003c\/em\u003e; \u003cem\u003eSteamin'\u003c\/em\u003e; \u003cem\u003eCookin'\u003c\/em\u003e; and \u003cem\u003eRelaxin'\u003c\/em\u003e. He stopped playing professionally for a number of years in the 1960s when the popularity of rock music coincided with a substantial drop in the popularity of jazz.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEddie \"Lockjaw\" Davis could hold his own in a saxophone battle with anyone. Early on, he picked up experience playing with the bands of \u003cstrong\u003eCootie Williams\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eLucky Millinder\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eAndy Kirk\u003c\/strong\u003e, and \u003cstrong\u003eLouis Armstrong\u003c\/strong\u003e. He began heading his own groups in 1946 and was with \u003cstrong\u003eCount Basie's Orchestra\u003c\/strong\u003e on several occasional (including 1952-1953, 1957, and 1964-1973). He teamed up with \u003cstrong\u003eShirley Scott\u003c\/strong\u003e's trio during 1955-1960.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter temporarily retiring to become a booking agent (1963-1964), Davis rejoined Basie. In his later years, Lockjaw often recorded with \u003cstrong\u003eHarry \"Sweets\" Edison\u003c\/strong\u003e and he remained a busy soloist up until his death.
