Originally released June 2nd 1998 on \u003cstrong\u003eSub Pop\u003c\/strong\u003e \/ \u003cstrong\u003eCreation Records\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cem\u003eMunki\u003c\/em\u003e was – up until the Mary Chain’s reformation in 2007 – an experimental rock’n’roll masterclass turned swan song for the \u003cstrong\u003eReid\u003c\/strong\u003e brothers, whose fractious in-fighting culminated in the band’s break-up less than a year after its release. It was perhaps fitting, then, that \u003cem\u003eMunki\u003c\/em\u003e is argued by some as the definitive Mary Chain record in the way it seemed to chart the full array of musical directions the band had ploughed over the five records that came before.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe decision to bookend the album with \u003cstrong\u003eJim\u003c\/strong\u003e’s rousing sing-along ‘\u003cem\u003eI Love Rock 'N' Roll\u003c\/em\u003e’ and \u003cstrong\u003eWilliam\u003c\/strong\u003e’s caustic white-noise anthem ‘\u003cem\u003eI Hate Rock 'N' Roll\u003c\/em\u003e’ perfectly captures the two-fold tension at the heart of the Mary Chain at that time – a tension between noise and melody, and warring brothers. Across the album’s 17 tracks and 70-minute running time, there are the expected abrasive noise-rock epics ‘\u003cem\u003eCracking Up\u003c\/em\u003e’ and ‘\u003cem\u003eDegenerate\u003c\/em\u003e’ by way of fuzzed-out pop hits like ‘\u003cem\u003eFizzy\u003c\/em\u003e’ and the tender acoustic slow-burner ‘\u003cem\u003eNever Understood\u003c\/em\u003e’.
