He teamed up with Maggy Luyten to shape the powerful, driving sound of ROCK JUSTICE. The album blends varied song styles, tied together by a nostalgic vibe and well-crafted production.

“The idea came to life when I was still playing in After Forever, where I didn’t get a serious chance to contribute to the songwriting. I had written a couple of songs that didn’t make the cut and realized that if I wanted to get my own music out there, I’d have to do it myself, or at least with other people,” says Bas. When he decided to form a band, he had two rules: he wouldn’t sing himself, and it wouldn’t be a female singer. Finding the right guy proved impossible and after several try-outs, one name kept coming up: Maggy Luyten. “Mag’s voice completely blew me away. I thought, ‘This chick sings like a dude and she delivers.’ Not long after that, we met at an Ayreon album presentation in Utrecht. She wanted to hear my songs to see if they inspired her. They did.” The rest is history. Maggy recalls with a smile: “When Bas came over to hear what I’d worked on, we both knew we had something. I still picture him driving back home: window down, our demo blasting, arm out, metal horns up, huge smile!”

The musical direction was clear: Rock ’n’ Roll. Anything between hard rock and metal was welcome as long as it came from the heart. With ’70s and ’80s hard rock and metal running through their veins, the chemistry felt natural. “The enthusiasm we feel when listening to what we’ve created and the belief that these songs deserve to be heard made starting a band feel natural,” says Maggy, who values the freedom to write lyrics and melodies. “Most ideas came naturally. I’m used to writing melodies over prog-based music and Bas writes riffs that feel like a highway for vocals, lots of space and freedom. The lyrics are based on personal experiences that I hope others can relate to when they need it.”

ROCK JUSTICE is completed by bass player Nick McGrath, a close friend of Bas since the late ’90s, known for playing with ACinDC, one of the most renowned AC/DC tribute bands. Drummer Mischa Aussems joined late in the process. “We were planning to use programmed drums, but Nick convinced us to give Mischa a shot. He absolutely nailed it, so we kept him and his recordings,” says Bas, who is more than happy with the natural, dynamic, yet old-school sound.

The album closes with the heavy and catchy First In Line, featuring a guest performance by metal queen Doro Pesch. “The song is a tribute to the legacy of our metal heroes and the need to keep that magic alive. Doro is a living legend who has built an unbreakable bond between our heroes, her friends, and those who continue to keep rock and metal strong. I sent her a short video explaining the message behind the lyrics and how wonderful it would be to have her on the song. She responded enthusiastically and added so much fire with her presence and unique voice. No one sounds like Doro and it’s a true gift to deliver this heartfelt metal hymn with her,” says Maggy proudly.

Doro and Maggy aren’t the only female rockers represented. The album artwork, created by Khriztian León, features Lady RJ in action. “She’s timeless and never gets old,” Maggy laughs, while Bas adds, “And she knows her rock and metal!”

You’ve Been Served was produced by Bas Maas, co-produced by Maggy Luyten, and mixed and mastered by Luca Princiotta (Doro, a.o.).
