And in a collection of songs in a so-called LP, you end up making a kind of movie.”\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDruidism, apocalyptic shopping malls, mediaeval themed restaurants, 12th century poetic form, surf rock, gargoyles, bog people, and the distinctive dry drum sound of 1970s era Fleetwood Mac are just some of the disparate wonders that inform the new songs.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor the new album recording sessions the band returned to work with producer \u003cstrong\u003eTom Dalgety\u003c\/strong\u003e, who drummer \u003cstrong\u003eDavid Lovering\u003c\/strong\u003e refers to as “a fifth Pixie” after producing 2016’s \u003cem\u003eHead Carrier\u003c\/em\u003e, 2019’s \u003cem\u003eBeneath the Eyrie\u003c\/em\u003e and 2022’s \u003cem\u003eDoggerel\u003c\/em\u003e. Early on in the recording process at \u003cstrong\u003eGuilford Sound\u003c\/strong\u003e studio in Vermont, the band noticed the new songs were dividing into two camps: what they came to call the “Dust Bowl Songs” - country-tinged, ballad-esque numbers such as ‘\u003cem\u003ePrimrose\u003c\/em\u003e’ and ‘\u003cem\u003eMercy Me\u003c\/em\u003e’, and on the other side, the album’s furious punk numbers such as ‘\u003cem\u003eYou’re So Impatient\u003c\/em\u003e’ and ‘\u003cem\u003eOyster Beds\u003c\/em\u003e’. Only ‘\u003cem\u003eJane\u003c\/em\u003e (\u003cem\u003eThe Night the Zombies Came\u003c\/em\u003e)’ keeps its feet in both camps — reminiscent of early 60s Phil Spector, the band hitting the sweet spot between mushy and abrasive, it’s a track that Black Francis allegedly likened to being chased by a swarm of bees.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe Night The Zombies Came\u003c\/em\u003e sessions also saw Pixies welcoming new bass player \u003cstrong\u003eEmma Richardson\u003c\/strong\u003e (\u003cstrong\u003eBand Of Skulls\u003c\/strong\u003e) to the line up; the first British band member to join the group. There’s also an expanded role for guitarist \u003cstrong\u003eJoey Santiago\u003c\/strong\u003e.
