Two years ago, whilst exploring the jazz kissas and record stores of Tokyo, woodwind maestro \u003cstrong\u003eChip Whickham\u003c\/strong\u003e and ATA mastermind and bassist \u003cstrong\u003eNeil Innes\u003c\/strong\u003e discussed their shared influences of Yusef Lateef, David Axelrod and Alice Coltrane. The seeds for a new project were sown and soon seven tracks of deep, spiritual, groove driven jazz were laid down and on tape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe moods of the album are varied yet share a sense of reverence and exploration. On \u003cem\u003eKarmen Cantala\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eAll Is \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eChip\u003c\/strong\u003e’s flute floats and soars, propelled by dreamlike harp and waves of impressionistic piano. \u003cem\u003eLow Orbit\u003c\/em\u003e takes things in a funkier direction, arrangements with \u003cstrong\u003eSteve Parry\u003c\/strong\u003e’s horn (including the unusual instrumentation of bassoon, French horn and tuba) channelling 1970s Quincy Jones and the loping swagger of Archie Shepp’s \u003cem\u003eMama Too Tight\u003c\/em\u003e. \u003cem\u003eThe Celestial Matari\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eMolecules\u003c\/em\u003e recall the flowing, cosmic sounds of Joe Henderson and Alice Coltrane’s masterpiece \u003cem\u003eThe Elements\u003c\/em\u003e, and \u003cem\u003eEarthly Elements\u003c\/em\u003e gets earthy indeed.
