It was a lively rehearsal, and it was all recorded upstairs in the control room by engineers \u003cstrong\u003eTom Lee\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003eDarren Roe\u003c\/strong\u003e. We really enjoyed ourselves, and felt the recordings captured the energy and dynamics of a live gig.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eA few months earlier, we had done the same thing in \u003cstrong\u003eSonic Studios\u003c\/strong\u003e rehearsing two songs with our friend \u003cstrong\u003eShobsy O’Brien\u003c\/strong\u003e, lead singer in the Irish band \u003cstrong\u003eState Lights\u003c\/strong\u003e. He was joining us the following night on Whelan’s main stage as our guest vocalist, duetting with Mary. We recorded the duets from that rehearsal and included them here. Coincidentally, that was our first recording session with the remarkable Guitarist \u003cstrong\u003eSarah Michelle\u003c\/strong\u003e who had just joined the band. Since that night, we have developed a strong friendship and an exceptional working relationship with Sarah. Her creative musical virtuosity, commitment and genuine feel for the blues is featured throughout this album. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn combination with our kicking rhythm section of bassist \u003cstrong\u003eChris Byrne\u003c\/strong\u003e and drummer \u003cstrong\u003eRobbie Barrett\u003c\/strong\u003e, augmented by \u003cstrong\u003eDermot Stokes\u003c\/strong\u003e on Piano and \u003cstrong\u003eBrian Palm\u003c\/strong\u003e on Harmonica, this record offers a snapshot of a formidable blues band in full flight. Last Christmas we released a single; a version of \u003cstrong\u003eBessie Smith\u003c\/strong\u003e’s ‘\u003cem\u003eAt the Christmas Ball\u003c\/em\u003e’. As our bassist and drummer were stricken with a flu when we were recording, they didn’t make it on to that record. Recently we returned to the studio and recorded the song again with the full band, beautifully capturing a nostalgic, festive feel. It is a bright addition to this album. Forefront in all of these recordings are Mary’s passionate and expressive vocals delivering her blues with the power and conviction for which she and her band are widely known.
