It wasn’t too long until the songs started flowing and Lane found himself reaching out to Adam McDaniel at Drop of Sun Studios–a vaunted space that’s been at the heart of indie-rock the past few years, bringing to life recent albums from \u003cstrong data-start=\"957\" data-end=\"973\"\u003eMJ Lenderman\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong data-start=\"975\" data-end=\"988\"\u003eWednesday\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong data-start=\"990\" data-end=\"998\"\u003eFust\u003c\/strong\u003e, and more. McDaniel introduced Lane to David Hartley, and what originally started with discussions to record one song quickly turned into a plan to track a whole album live with a six piece band. Once in the studio, co-producer McDaniel encouraged the group to lean on intuition–“All of the players on this record really brought it to life in such a cosmic way. They instilled so much childlike wonder and fun into the making of the album. It inspired me to keep going” says Lane.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1481\" data-end=\"2218\"\u003eLyrically the album is a collection of vignettes about people who’ve become alienated from their deepest desires of connection, belonging, intimacy, and autonomy–inspired both by Lane’s own life and the lives of people he’s loved. The unique character of the album emerged when Lane made the decision to pair the dark lyrical content with bright \u0026amp; lush arrangements, inspired by \u003cstrong data-start=\"1860\" data-end=\"1874\"\u003eGene Clark\u003c\/strong\u003e’s \u003cem data-start=\"1877\" data-end=\"1887\"\u003eNo Other\u003c\/em\u003e, \u003cstrong data-start=\"1889\" data-end=\"1903\"\u003eNeil Young\u003c\/strong\u003e’s \u003cem data-start=\"1906\" data-end=\"1927\"\u003eAfter the Gold Rush\u003c\/em\u003e, and \u003cstrong data-start=\"1933\" data-end=\"1947\"\u003eAmen Dunes\u003c\/strong\u003e’ \u003cem data-start=\"1949\" data-end=\"1955\"\u003eLove\u003c\/em\u003e. In Lane’s words, “The content of the songs got way darker, and my reaction was to make the songs catchier, and to lean harder into the music that influenced me. I wanted each song to feel like a room in a haunted house, with a beautiful garden growing outside”.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"2220\" data-end=\"2739\"\u003eAlbum opener \u003cem data-start=\"2233\" data-end=\"2251\"\u003eI Am Not Ashamed\u003c\/em\u003e was inspired by the anti-memoir of actress \u003cstrong data-start=\"2295\" data-end=\"2313\"\u003eBarbara Peyton\u003c\/strong\u003e, a 1950’s Hollywood starlet who met an untimely end; “It’s about knowing that whatever you’ve done to survive, you still deserve love” says Lane. \u003cem data-start=\"2460\" data-end=\"2468\"\u003eMother\u003c\/em\u003e pairs lyrics about ancestral trauma with the sunshine-pop influence of \u003cstrong data-start=\"2540\" data-end=\"2559\"\u003eColin Blunstone\u003c\/strong\u003e, featuring backing vocals from Lane’s sister \u003cstrong data-start=\"2605\" data-end=\"2624\"\u003eBarrett Hartley\u003c\/strong\u003e. “It's about coming to terms with the fact that the people meant to protect us are dealing with their own trauma…”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"2741\" data-end=\"3622\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"\u003eMeanwhile, \u003cem data-start=\"2752\" data-end=\"2774\"\u003eAll Of This Is Yours\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem data-start=\"2779\" data-end=\"2790\"\u003eTone Poem\u003c\/em\u003e form the spiritual center of the album, an attempt to transmute anger \u0026amp; pain to bittersweet acceptance in the wake of a breakup. “I feel like on the surface this is essentially a breakup album, a lot of these songs are about mourning the end of a relationship and reflecting on what went down. I was falling in love and getting my heart broken, then waking up and driving across the country and doing it all again.” \u003cem data-start=\"3207\" data-end=\"3227\"\u003eLove Is Not A Song\u003c\/em\u003e was inspired by \u003cstrong data-start=\"3244\" data-end=\"3260\"\u003eMargo Guryan\u003c\/strong\u003e’s \u003cem data-start=\"3263\" data-end=\"3275\"\u003eLove Songs\u003c\/em\u003e, pairing bright piano with playful lyrics about an old man who’s been beaten down by life but still believes his greatest love is yet to come.
