I think the sparseness aptly reflects the solitude that is required of that kind of healing--although there are of course a couple songs that required a team to put together and feel right.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAn avid journaler, McRae has been breathlessly documenting her existence since she was 18. Her first album, \u003cem\u003eAre You Happy Now?\u003c\/em\u003e, was a mission statement for the artist who grew up an automatic outsider: a Black Jewish girl from Los Angeles, hellbent on making folk music in spite of the world's attempts to box her into other, more stereotypically Black genres. McRae looked to her songwriting heroes (\u003cstrong\u003eAlicia Keys\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eCarole King\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eJames Taylor\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eStevie Wonder\u003c\/strong\u003e) to build a sonic world all her own. As her audience grew and with myriad doors began unlocking, it \"became the record of my coming-of-age. But it was a quiet coming-of-age, one that mostly took place inside my own head.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNext, \u003cem\u003eI Don’t Know How But They Found Me!\u003c\/em\u003e took place against the backdrop of romantic turbulence and McRae's rapidly growing audience. \"I had never been in love before,\" McRae said. \"Not really. And then I had two life-altering relationships back to back in my early twenties. This album was primarily an exploration about how love and intimacy knock the wind out of you, can take your legs out from under you.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eShe has also had multiple viral moments, including in the run up to writing \u003cem\u003eI Don’t Know How But They Found Me!\u003c\/em\u003e, when McRae posted a solo verse and chorus online, little more than a piece of a demo, and it took off. Covers, duets, and an avalanche of new fans followed (including the likes of \u003cstrong\u003eJustin Bieber\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eStormzy\u003c\/strong\u003e, and \u003cstrong\u003eDan Nigro\u003c\/strong\u003e to name a few); the song was the beginning of \u003cem\u003e\"Massachusetts\"\u003c\/em\u003e, which would become her first Dead Oceans release.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMcRae ventured to North Carolina to record \u003cem\u003eI Don't Know How But They Found Me!\u003c\/em\u003e with \u003cstrong\u003eBrad Cook\u003c\/strong\u003e (\u003cstrong\u003eWaxahatchee\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eSuki Waterhouse\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eBon Iver\u003c\/strong\u003e), also enlisting the help of \u003cstrong\u003eHippo Campus's Nathan Stocker\u003c\/strong\u003e on guitar, \u003cstrong\u003eBon Iver's Matthew McCaughan\u003c\/strong\u003e on drums, and her younger brother, \u003cstrong\u003eHolden McRae\u003c\/strong\u003e, on keys. \"It felt like summer camp.
