Or how to remain creative in the modern world.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eNanocluster\u003c\/strong\u003e started as a bespoke one off pop up gig that turned into an album series.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBuilt around \u003cstrong\u003eColin Newman\u003c\/strong\u003e from acclaimed UK post-punk band \u003cstrong\u003eWire\u003c\/strong\u003e and his partner in life and sound \u003cstrong\u003eMalka Spigel\u003c\/strong\u003e from \u003cstrong\u003eMinimal Compact\u003c\/strong\u003e with various guests, they define collaboration.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eColin met Malka when he produced her band in 1985.The collaboration started there.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThey became a couple and created their own projects like the instrumental electronic duo \u003cstrong\u003eImmersion\u003c\/strong\u003e in 1994 and \u003cstrong\u003eGithead\u003c\/strong\u003e in 2004 - spaces where they both ‘feel really comfortable.’\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eGrowing out of Immersion, \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eNanocluster\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e was birthed as a series of one-off gigs at the Rosehill in their new hometown of Brighton in 2017 with an added cast of influential and cutting edge musicians.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThese were not ad hoc jams. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe songs had been written and rehearsed prior to each performance. This adventure led to a debut album, \u003cem\u003eNanocluster Vol 1\u003c\/em\u003e, released in 2021 with \u003cstrong\u003eStereolab\u003c\/strong\u003e singer\/guitarist \u003cstrong\u003eLaetitia Sadier\u003c\/strong\u003e, German post-rock duo \u003cstrong\u003eTarwater\u003c\/strong\u003e, electronic musician \u003cstrong\u003eUlrich Schnauss\u003c\/strong\u003e and experimental artist \u003cstrong\u003eRobin Rimbaud\u003c\/strong\u003e (Scanner).\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis third album in the Nanocluster series is a mid-Atlantic melting pot of ideas that have created a brand new third way. The album sees a collaboration between the European post-punk electronic discipline of \u003cstrong\u003eImmersion\u003c\/strong\u003e meeting the American ambient country band \u003cstrong\u003eSUSS\u003c\/strong\u003e and their big sky, new world, Americana cinematic soundscapes to create a perfect Nanocluster! It’s a perfect combination that fits the Nanocluster vision. Immersion’s open-minded approach sees their music spark new textures with the American band who were once described by \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eUNCUT\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e magazine as “Eno’s Apollo Atmospheres crash-landed in America’s Sonoran Desert,” and by Pitchfork as “Neither rawboned nor ramshackle … their elegantly composed brand of ambient country stands as tall and clean as a brand-new pair of cowboy boots.” \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSuss\u003c\/strong\u003e are composed of veteran musicians \u003cstrong\u003ePat Irwin\u003c\/strong\u003e (the B-52s, Raybeats, 8 Eyed Spy), \u003cstrong\u003eBob Holmes\u003c\/strong\u003e (numun, Rubber Rodeo), and \u003cstrong\u003eJonathan Gregg\u003c\/strong\u003e (the Combine, the Linemen), SUSS combine Pedal Steel, National Steel Guitar, Mandolin, Harmonica, Baritone Guitar, and the Harmonium, which they weave with synthesizers and loops to create their big, lonesome sound.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMalka:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e‘Nanocluster is collaboration but in a very specific form. We don't have rules. It’s a series of creative snapshots. Malka \u0026amp; I operate as a team and now we’ve taken it to another level. Malka comes from a band where they would stand in a room together and work out the material.
