He has, for instance, made it clear that a significant font of inspiration was \u003cstrong\u003eRobert Fripp\u003c\/strong\u003e’s guitar style and melding of rock music with cutting-edge electronics (especially in collaboration with \u003cstrong\u003eBrian Eno\u003c\/strong\u003e). Indeed, \u003cstrong\u003eHeldon\u003c\/strong\u003e’s fifth album — 1976’s \u003cstrong\u003eUn Rêve Sans Conséquence Spéciale\u003c\/strong\u003e — was named after a live bootleg of a \u003cstrong\u003eKing Crimson\u003c\/strong\u003e concert.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePinhas first met Fripp in 1974. The pair became friends, and have remained in contact ever since. Pinhas was even offered a deal with \u003cstrong\u003eE.G. Records\u003c\/strong\u003e, the company that oversaw \u003cstrong\u003eKing Crimson\u003c\/strong\u003e alongside other successful groups like \u003cstrong\u003eRoxy Music\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003eELP\u003c\/strong\u003e. \u003cem\u003e“That was a dream,”\u003c\/em\u003e says Pinhas. \u003cem\u003e“But when you are 22, you are in a hurry. They asked me to wait one or two years before joining the team. I couldn’t wait two years! At 22, two years is too much.”\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInstead, Pinhas forged another path. He launched his own label, \u003cstrong\u003eDisjuncta\u003c\/strong\u003e, which he later sold to purchase the Moog synthesiser that would make a huge difference to \u003cstrong\u003eHeldon\u003c\/strong\u003e’s sound. Musical benchmarks aside, \u003cstrong\u003eHeldon\u003c\/strong\u003e’s output also drew from radical science fiction (\u003cstrong\u003ePhilip K. Dick\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eNorman Spinrad\u003c\/strong\u003e, etc.) as well as philosophy. The sleeve of the fifth LP features a quote from \u003cstrong\u003ePierre Klossowski\u003c\/strong\u003e’s \u003cstrong\u003eNietzsche and the Vicious Circle\u003c\/strong\u003e (1969). The book had profound impact on thinkers such as \u003cstrong\u003eJean-François Lyotard\u003c\/strong\u003e, who was Pinhas’ PhD supervisor at the Sorbonne, and \u003cstrong\u003eGilles Deleuze\u003c\/strong\u003e, another mentor and friend to Pinhas right up until the end of Deleuze’s life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePinhas compares his readiness to signpost his influences to citations in academic publications: \u003cem\u003e“In the field of philosophy at university, it’s a normal thing to do.”\u003c\/em\u003e Besides, \u003cstrong\u003eHeldon\u003c\/strong\u003e never represented a mere facsimile of Pinhas’ musical touchstones: \u003cstrong\u003e King Crimson\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eJimi Hendrix\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eMiles Davis\u003c\/strong\u003e, or \u003cstrong\u003eFrank Zappa\u003c\/strong\u003e. \u003cem\u003e“I don’t want to be them, of course. I don’t feel there is a real relationship between \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eKing Crimson\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cem\u003e’s music and mine.
