In this domain, sometimes referred to as ‘future jazz’ or ‘nu jazz’, the Norwegian composer is both a pioneer and a veteran having been one of the first jazz musicians to embrace the new digital and electronica tendencies at the turn of the century. With his signature sound that brings together poignant trumpet and dynamic electronic soundscapes, Molvær has achieved heavyweight status for showing a path forward for the genre in a new age, a path which, faithful to jazz’ past, remains cool all the way. His latest release, Stitches, is no different. Where that Scottish band tempers its twee-ness with clever, winking wordplay, Erlend Oye and Eirik Glambek Boe are more akin to a latter-day Simon and Garfunkel or a couple of Nick Drakes who are lucky to have found each other. Disarmingly sensitive, poetic tracks such as “Parallel Lines” (“What’s the immaterial substance that envelops two/That one perceives as hunger and the other as food”) are sung by the duo in honeyed harmonies with a pleasantly laid-back delivery. Oye and Boe eschew drums on all but two tracks (upbeat highlights “Toxic Girl” and “Failure“), simply using layered guitars and the occasional string, piano, or trumpet flourish to accent the hushed power of their songs. The overall effect is one of bedroom introspection, well suited to their nostalgic, inward-looking lyrics.

The album is certified Silver in the UK and Gold in their native Norway. The definitive string quartet version of 'Long Gradus' is available as a 2LP and CD, and the collection of all four arrangements (strings, woodwinds, brass & organ, choir & electronics) is presented as the 'Long Gradus: Arrangements' 4CD set.

'Long Gradus' began in 2020 when Sarah Davachi was selected to participate in Quatuor Bozzini’s Composer’s Kitchen residency, which was to be a joint production with Gaudeamus Muziekweek in the Netherlands. With the postponement of the residency to the following year, the composer was given the opportunity to take a step back and look at the piece over a much longer period of time than would have ordinarily been possible. The resulting longform composition in four parts, written in its initial form for string quartet, was developed as an iteration of an ongoing preoccupation with chordal suspension and cadential structure. In this context, horizontal shifts in pitch material and texture occur on a very gradual scale, allowing the listener's perceptions to settle on the spatial experience of harmony. A system of septimal just intonation helps to further the production of a consonant acoustic environment. 'Long Gradus' uses a formalized articulation of time-bracket notation alongside unfixed indications of pitch, texture, and voicing that allow the players some discretion in determining the shape of the piece. A sense of pacing that is markedly different from that of mensural notation emerges accordingly, while the open structure of the composition results in each performance having a unique and unpredictable configuration.

The piece may be arranged in a quartet format for any instrumentation that can alter its intonation with some degree of accuracy or produce a natural seventh harmonic. Substitution of the string quartet with other instruments as desired or imagined, both acoustic and electronic, is entirely acceptable and indeed encouraged. To this end, Davachi has also offered the 'Long Gradus: Arrangements' 4CD set, which includes the string quartet version as well as arrangements for woodwinds, brass and organ, and choir and electronics. A 'gradus' is a sort of handbook meant to aid in learning a difficult practice; in this case, 'Long Gradus' is designed to considerably slow the cognitive movements of both listener and player, and to focus their attention on the relationships between moments. A rich harmonic landscape that is constantly shifting and which changes with each engagement is the listener’s return. For the player, 'Long Gradus' is an invitation to practice active listening and to immerse oneself in the stillness of psychoacoustic space and time.

Davachi comments: “I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Quatuor Bozzini for the opportunity to go through this process together, which is exceedingly uncommon in the context of chamber music. Typically, when writing for an ensemble or orchestra, the composer is given very few, if any, occasions to actually adjust their work in a meaningful way outside of perhaps one or two brief rehearsals of an essentially final score. It is extremely rare and an enormous luxury to begin with simple sketches or ideas and to actually construct a piece over a period of several months or more from a place of sonic assurance – that is, being able to listen and to explore and to continually fine tune in response to the sound itself, in conjunction with the performers. Part of the reason that my earliest compositional efforts arose within the domain of electroacoustic and acousmatic music is because of the control that it offered, to intuit sound in real time rather than through the indirect interpretation of future sound in the form of a score. Even now, when I compose work for chamber ensembles, I typically always start from a recorded version or from a demo – from the sound itself – and then work backwards to generate the score that will result in that music. It seems to be a vestige of conservatory thinking to view music performance, even in relation to new music, as a kind of reading of notes on the page that simply results in things just falling into place as expected. But, when the music goes beyond what’s on the page to include a dialogue with the acoustic space of the performance, and to require a certain patience and concentration on part of the performers, there needs to be a different approach; the Composer’s Kitchen residency offered that respect and curiosity.”

2LP Tracklist:

A. With it they captured an actual norther, bottling its elemental power for their own devices. The vastness of one’s internal life meets the vastness of space, and in that moment those perspectives fuse in a state of wonder and curiosity. Space as an instrument, the new album by French artist and musician Félicia Atkinson, invites listeners to explore the phantasmic landscapes created in such transformative encounters, when the mind is open and receptive to its environment. Like being absorbed by the immensity of the night sky, this music dilates the imagination and helps us to sit comfortably in the mystery of the ineffable.

We are guided through Space as an instrument by the piano, its alinear story told through restrained, iterative melodies that become entwined with the sounds at the music’s margins - a wisp of electronics, a pinprick of an enunciated consonant. They were recorded on Atkinson’s phone, which was placed next to the keys, or behind her, with the sound of the room bleeding through to give a sense of the place and time of the encounter. She describes these sessions as meetings where she and the piano commune to co-create these spiraling phrases and vaporous dissonances moment by moment. Complicating this dynamic is the presence of digital pianos, which exist in the surreal space of diodes and LED displays. They act as avatars of their three-dimensional counterparts: nowhere and everywhere simultaneously.

Still, the inhabited world of people, water, and wind can be heard throughout Space as an instrument. Often these recordings are integrated into the backdrop of electronics, or reduced to the sound of movements whose physical forms are obscured: the microphone straining against a forceful gust on “Sorry,” arhythmic footsteps traversing an invisible terrain on “Pensées Magiques.” These field recordings take us to the brink of synesthetic experience, allowing us to glimpse with our ear the topography of the imagination. But Atkinson’s music resists any kind of singular perspective on the scene, or any distinct conclusion. “It doesn’t explain anything,” she says, “but it translates the way I perceive it, somehow.”

Atkinson is a polymath by nature, engrossed in a variety of daily artistic practices that nourish one another. In her garden, she performs the slow work of cross-species relationship building, cultivating an ideal space for introspection and further creation; many of the album’s vocal and electronic elements were recorded there. Poetry, which she prizes for its capacity to render the everyday tools of meaning-making more enigmatic, becomes folded into the music as well. She paints as often as time allows. One personal limitation Atkinson finds in painting, the rendering of perspective, has become one of her music’s defining characteristics. The vantage point of the listener is slippery and undefined, with sounds at once appearing gigantic and miniscule, distant and immediate.

This phenomena is central to “Thinking Iceberg,” a 13-minute piece that was whittled down from an hour and a half performance, who remain only a ghostly presence on the album’s recording. Atkinson wrote the piece in response to Olivier Remaud’s book ‘Thinking Like An Iceberg,’ in which the philosopher assigns agency to these massive, endangered objects and imagines how they might perceive their millenia-long relationship to humans. Stoic synthesizer tones percolate while water flows just out of the immediate frame with a disarming clarity and presence. As the piece crests, Atkinson’s whispered voice emerges softly, placed right against the listener’s left ear, contrasting with the billowing mass of sound that otherwise dominates. We emerge with a glimmer of awareness of how immensity and delicacy can coexist as time and humanity extract their toll.

Atkinson says her music exists “on the verge of understanding and not understanding,” which often precludes such literal interpretations. But in that nebulous space there is humility and openness, and perhaps enough empathy to understand the consciousness of a massive, frozen chunk of water. With the listener’s perspective diffused into many different vantage points, how might that, too, become a vehicle for the development of compassion? As we listen, we encounter the wisdom that there is meaning not just in the experience of the sublime, that radical juxtaposition of limitlessness and intimacy, but also in the continuum of countless individuals that have taken the same journey.

Tracklist:

01. Drawing on her own minimalist approach, Sarah Davachi explores, with extreme care, the weavings and complex relationships between the timbral, spatial and durational components of music. Using developments that can be appreciated over time, the composer manages to create music that is extremely precise, subtle and lively. But what is striking, and particularly evident in Basse Brevis, is that such an approach, both abstract and restrained, is nonetheless at times utterly poignant. The work combines moments of formal exploration with moments of pure emotion in a perfectly mastered fashion, creating a gentle tension as it swings between two modes of listening that navigate indecisively within both instrumental and concrete approaches, tracing, in parallel, a diagonal of sound that unfolds around perception, sensation and feeling.

Tracklist:

01. François J. Functioning variously as a kind of deconstructed rock band, ambient chamber ensemble and minimalist compositional workshop, on 'Norther' we find the group combining their wide musical experience into something singular and coherent with a deeply emotional core.

Largely orbiting around their extended use of the electric guitar, their approach might at times recall the experiments of Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca, but across the album we see a band whose musical vision extends well beyond the iconoclasm of 80's New York. Drawing on hypnotic musics from across the spectrum, they bring a compositional approach to sounds often associated with freeform sprawl or more academic settings, never letting pathos be lost to process. Equally reminiscent of the gentle rolling momentum of The Necks as they are the coiled precision of an act on Kompakt; this is a music which ebbs and flows, lives and breathes.

The record consists of six pieces, each of which demonstrates an entirely different creative process. On blossoming opener ‘Weather’, whirring motors are made to dance fairy-like atop guitar strings and drums before being overwhelmed by great thrusts of bass; on the dizzying ‘Magnetic Language’ the band’s voices are played back through their phones and amplified with guitar pickups, magnets wrapped in copper wire, a conversation between technology old and new. The title of penultimate piece ‘Golden Bridges’ refers to the brass rods the band shift beneath the strings of their guitars to create its glowing cascade of harmonics.

All, however, tap to one degree or another into that abiding theme of the weather, not least the title track for which the band erected a ramshackle aeolian harp –an instrument played by the wind – on the roof of a former meteorological observatory on The Wirral. With it they captured an actual norther, bottling its elemental power for their own devices. When examining their specimen they found a deep resonance between the sounds it made, which are eerily akin to guitar feedback, and the quest to extract rich overtones from the instrument that has remained a constant through their career as experimental outliers.

Despite the long wait since their last full length, the band’s creative drive has been ceaseless in that time. Those eight years away were defined by collaborations, solo excursions and one-off performances – whether external projects like Dialect, The Aleph and Land Trance, their part in the Salford Large Ensemble of Northern underground musicians or Whistling Arrow, with Laura Cannell and Charles Hayward, a site-specific series of shows in Odense, Denmark, work with classical musicians like the BBC Philharmonic and Immix Ensemble, or ambitious educational projects with schoolchildren in Liverpool and Newcastle. “Nearly all of these have played into the direction the material on Norther has taken,” says the band’s Benjamin D. Duvall.

“All of the projects we were involved in between 2016 and 2024 have expanded the boundaries of what we do by exposing us to a huge variety of instruments, personalities and ways of working. Then their individual concerns – Lia, exploring the possibilities and dualities of mundane and profound sounds; Whitney (as Matchess and herself) presenting the listener with the effects of sound on bodies and minds – were able to be more finely articulated and integrated in this finished work.

Recording at Experimental Sound Studio, Whitney filled out the low end of her sound with sine waves, making binaural beats through function generators and her ARP Odyssey synthesizer. Lia added an AM/FM radio and her Teenage Engineering OP-1 synthesizer. Using the open strings on both viola and cello to create the drones and establish a baseline of gravity, they improvised, building up phases of spontaneity before giving careful consideration to what they’d assembled, editing it to arrive at a final mix. The resulting sound isn’t electro-acoustic, exactly; more like electronics and acoustics together, with each layer transforming the one next to it. Sanzhi Pod City was built from 1978 onwards, made up of buildings constructed from assemblages of ‘pods’ inspired by the futuro houses of Finnish architect Matti Suuronen. The project was abandoned in 1980, following a number of accidents during construction and persistent rumours that the site was haunted. However, this wasteland of a city has allowed insects to proliferate, in particular five species of orchid mantis. It is this strange environment, made up of utopian buildings, proliferating insects and vegetation reclaiming the site, that serves as the imaginary space for Michelle Helene Mackenzie and Stefan Maier’s music, a music of carefully designed pace and progression, drawing, through resonance and stridulation, subtle sonic materials that guide and accompany us into multiple worlds with admirable ease and grace.

SIDE B
OLIVIA BLOCK ‘BREACH’ (15:54)

Breach, by American composer Olivia Block, engages in a dialogue between field
recordings and synthesised sounds, creating a vibrant plea for wild spaces that face
an ever-growing threat to their survival from human activities. Youngblood toured the record heavily until 2020, when the pandemic forced him off the road and, hungry for fresh inspiration, he began enrolling in Russian, Danish, Spanish, and Japanese language lessons. He didn’t realize it at the time, but those classes weren’t just expanding his vocabulary, they were laying the groundwork for his most ambitious, experimental album yet: Cascades, Cascading, Cascadingly.

Written and recorded at home in Nashville, the collection is a dreamy series of meditations steeped in desire and yearning, loneliness and loss, exhilaration and escape. Guraj in 2021 following a brush with mortality, extensive forced recovery and subsequent hints of depression after an almost fatal bike crash, leaving our wandering soul, once again, at the edges. Since their debut EP in 2014, the band has built a devoted audience drawn to their emotionally rich songwriting, intricate production, and distinct sonic identity. With Heartstrings, they take a bold step forward, writing and recording in the studio as a collective for the first time, capturing the raw immediacy of live performance while expanding their sound with lush textures, layered harmonies, and deeply personal storytelling. “We wanted to capture the moment to create something that feels real, unfiltered, and alive,” says Chris Hyson.

This album marks an evolution in Snowpoet’s approach. Instead of the fragmented process of previous records, Heartstrings was born in the moment, with the full band improvising, shaping, and refining ideas together in real time. The result is an album that feels alive - organic, immersive, and deeply human. Sonically, the group leans into rich, analogue synth tones, intricate drum textures, and a dynamic push-and-pull between electronic and acoustic elements. Lyrically, it is their most personal work to date, weaving themes of life, loss, and renewal with poetic honesty. “The sound of this record is richer, bigger, more expansive, representative of the culmination of everything we’ve done so far,” reflects Lauren Kinsella.

At the heart of Heartstrings is a powerful contrast - moments of deep emotional weight balanced with luminous joy. Their materials and working methods differ significantly, with Ielasi having focussed for many years on electro-acoustic techniques alongside his ongoing commitment to the guitar, and Sheen primarily composing for traditional instruments. More important, though, is what they share: a fascination with what Sheen calls “mysterious, liminal musical material,” using irregular repetition and cyclical forms to create structures at once alive with activity and almost static, as well as a rigorous exploration of spatial diffusion and the interaction of sound event and environment.

Working individually with a library of acoustic instrument sounds from Sheen’s recent projects and Ielasi’s guitar, the pair eventually met for several days at Ielasi’s home studio in Monza, sculpting the fourteen pieces that make up The Vestige. Like Ielasi and Sheen’s solo works, the record shows an exquisite attention to details of sequencing and pacing, the sound palette and compositional approach consistent throughout while each piece asserts its own identity. The twenty-five seconds of the opening piece serve as an entrée into the record’s distinctive world of sound: repeated chirps fluctuate in volume as they move across the stereo spectrum, woven between strangled snatches of string glissando against a backdrop of percussive ticks, long tones, and white noise. Across the remaining thirteen pieces, Ielasi and Sheen sketch further dimensions of the ambiguous space, where distinctions between pitch and noise, repetition and irregularity, electronic and acoustic remain pointedly unclear.

As the record’s title suggests, the origins of the sounds we hear have become remote: while at moments we get flashes of timbres and attacks that could come from wind instruments, bowed strings, or prepared guitar, these remain vestigial traces, glimpsed through a veil of shifting white noise textures. These textures are themselves difficult to trace, suggesting artefacts of the recording process, electronic synthesis, amplified room sound, rubbed instruments or objects. The Vestige shows an unusual degree of attention to frequency range as a compositional tool, something it shares with the hyper-subtle variations of Ielasi’s electroacoustic works and the deliberately ‘unbalanced’ midrange-heavy ensemble of Sheen’s Sub. Here, movement between episodes is as much about adding or removing a frequency band as it is about changes in density, harmonic content, or instrumental texture. Tracks are marked by the sudden appearance of subbass or exaggeration of high frequencies in otherwise similar material, contributing to our sense that these fourteen pieces are like different views on a scene that we can never quite see clearly. While calling up a range of past music, from the early works of Rolf Julius to Simha Arom’s recordings of layered polyrhythms embedded in the background sounds of central African villages to the temporal distortions and layered hiss of DJ Screw, the alluring and disconcerting world of The Vestige is entirely its own.

Tracklist:

A1. Once more, Gisler worked with a wide array of instruments and made use of unconventional techniques. ‘Ellipsis (Origin)’ combines kalimba melodies and alphorn drones, the title track is based on the sounds of shower water dropping onto his glass shower door that he recorded with a piezo pick-up. Some of the pieces, like ‘TrainStation’ employ conventional set-ups including guitar, bass, and drums in unusual ways, and most of them draw on field recordings.

Throughout the album, you’ll hear a door creak, car wheels on wet asphalt, the soundscape of Lucerne’s main train station on a busy Saturday evening, and much more. The last piece, ‘Drain’ is even entirely based on recordings made inside a manhole after heavy rainfall. This is emblematic of how UnKnown finds new wonders in the banality of everyday life. By transforming his sound material through digital manipulation and enriching it with acoustic sounds. This album is about the beauty of getting lost on the way.

Tracklist:

A1. I didn’t want anyone to read them at the time, and created melodies for my words, sometimes drawing maps. Singing these melodies to myself would imprint them into my head.” Today, informed by a world of musical knowledge, Hansen-Knarhoi embraces folk music as a practice. “This aural tradition, I have found, is still my truest form of creative expression. To understand the song, one must listen to the delivery, feel the weight of the words, and understand the elements and intricacies that make the song what it is.”

The hypnotic spiralling harp and methodical bass that comprise the bedrock of “Crying in Pastel”, acts as a world in which a lyrical vortex of sorrow cuts through the track’s serenity . Hansen-Knarhoi’s voice is raw and gritty, as she sings, “Did you think of me?/Something pretty?/Are you scared of me?” “Crying in Pastel” vacillates between anger, fear and sadness, all feelings that coexist in grief. Issued digitally and as a limited edition of 200 copies on 180-gram vinyl housed in an Invercote sleeve, it continues Klinga’s intricate exploration of sound and space.

Darker and more dystopian in its bloom, Hundred Tongues absorbs the unease of the present and yet throws a flash of light, albeit blinding. Composed at Malmö Art Museum on the 16th-century Genarpsorgan, and threaded with Buchla synthesiser, field recordings from Skåne and Öland, and a deliberate, focused touch, it unfolds as one long form: episodes that coil, return, and reconfigure rather than resolve. “Spring to Mind” begins with static and the pressure of thin air, as though drawn from the negative space between signals. Noise condenses into a hum, clarifies into tone, and organ chords hover between physical and imagined terrain. “Opaque Stars” blurs the seam between pipes and circuits, its crystalline timbre evoking avian song. “Conspiracy of Silence” brings the birds into focus—the collared flycatcher’s cascade of notes intertwines with trembling pipes, suggesting communion through attentive listening.
The eighteen-minute title piece sits at the work’s centre, opening in ambiguity—crackles, murmurs, and clicks that dissolve into organ and Buchla tones hovering between noise and tone. In Swedish lore, songbirds were said to have a hundred tongues; here, organ and synthesiser breathe as one. Stitched from live recordings in Skovgaardsalen, Norberg kyrka, and Koncertkirken, the suite ends with the return of the everyday world. Klinga’s music slows perception and bridges centuries. Pairing one of Sweden’s oldest organs with modular electronics, he reveals the kinship of pipe, circuit, and birdsong—reminding us that listening itself may be the origin of music.

Tracklist:

Spring to Mind
Opaque Stars
Conspiracy of Silence
Fall Again
Hundred Tongues

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0588/3455/0945/files/Erik_Klinga_-_Hundred_Tongues_-_2026.jpg?v=1765542141
cole-berliner-the-black-door-lp-vinyl
COLE BERLINER - The Black Door - LP - Vinyl

LP - Standard Edition Black Vinyl.

Guitarist/composer Cole Berliner's writing, arranging and playing highlights an album of rich-grained, acoustic, west coast parlor music and modern electro-acoustic instrumentals in the challenger tradition of Bert Jansch's Avocet, Marc Ribot's Saints and Jim O'Rourke's Bad Timing.
